Banks of the Tajuña

Wine and Traditions

Tielmes

Tielmes offers a good range of Wine Tourism and Olive Oil Tourism experiences, on the banks of the Tajuña River, where the olive groves and vineyards that produce its excellent wines and oils are cultivated. Stroll along the Vía Verde del Tajuña and enjoy its colorful and shaped landscapes: vineyards that change color and shape depending on the season, olive trees in bloom or laden with olives… Discover the work in the fields, meet its people and their traditions. Come and taste the excellent olive oil from Tielmes. Tielmes and Morata de Tajuña offer a rich heritage of great contrasts: the monumental altarpiece of the Morata temple versus, for example, the cave houses and restored dwellings of the past, in Tielmes.

Its Renaissance single-nave temple with Baroque elements preserves a Baroque baptismal font inside and an important, perfectly organized and preserved archive, with documentation dating back to the 16th century. At the foot of the church, we find its Main Square, around which the urban layout of Belmonte is structured. Square-shaped with supports on a stone base from Colmenar de Oreja, it houses a sand circle used as a bullring during festivals.

Torre del Homenaje de la Orden Militar de Santiago (14th-16th Centuries)

Looking at the 22 meters of height of the Tribute Tower, it is hard to imagine that we are actually looking at only a small part of what was the Fortress of the Military Order of Santiago. This tower was the «tribute tower,» the residence of the Commander of the Order of Santiago who was in charge of the government of the fortress and the entire commandery, and it occupied one of the corners of a fortified enclosure that extended to the north and west.

Sanctuary and Convent of Our Lady of Victory of Lepanto (16th Century)

The image of the Virgin of Victory of Lepanto occupies the main altar of the temple. The same image to which D. Luis de Requesens y Zúñiga, first lieutenant of Don Juan of Austria, entrusted himself on October 7, 1571, to help him win the Battle of Lepanto against the Ottoman Fleet.

A recommendation:
It is worth visiting Colmenar de Oreja at the end of May to enjoy its Wine Fair. And Villarejo de Salvanés at the beginning of October, for the patron saint festivities in honor of the Virgin of Victory of Lepanto, where a recreation of the Battle of Lepanto is celebrated by the townspeople.

You can taste their wines, and if you come as a group, you can arrange a visit that includes an appetizer.

Palace of the Marquis of Villena and the House of the Savages

Cadalso is a beautiful town that combines diverse rustic facades with historiated lintels and coats of arms, recalling a glorious past that today remains silent in the tranquility of its streets. From those times, we have the palace of the Marquis of Villena, a beautiful Renaissance building from the 16th century; but the best part is its gardens and the building’s pond. The pond, in addition to watering the old orchards to its left, served a recreational purpose, which is why it is surrounded by elegant stone gazebos and bandstands carved from the local quarries. Other places of interest are the ancestral homes scattered throughout San Antón and Real streets, adorned with lintels, jambs, frames, and friezes. The House of the Habsburgs is a building that stands out for its ashlar portal and heraldic shield whose iconography is an allegory to the «homo silvestris,» the wild man, which is why it is known in the town as the House of the Savages.

Mudejar Church and Necropolis La Mezquita

The «La Mezquita» site is a complex composed of the remains of a Romanesque-Mudejar church and the adjacent cemetery. Several construction phases can be identified in both elements. The tombs located outside the temple can be dated to the medieval period (11th-12th centuries), while those inside the temple belong to the modern era, as evidenced by the Masonic engravings that can be seen on its ceilings.

A recommendation:

If you like Wine Tourism, you cannot miss the wine festivals of Cadalso de los Vidrios and Cenicientos. In March, the Caldalvín Wine Fair is organized in Cadalso; and during harvest time, in Cenicientos, the Harvest Festival is celebrated, with grape stomping in the town square.

The ravages of time and neglect sometimes create their own works of art, and this corner of nature, history, and nostalgia is an example. In a setting of incomparable beauty, they show us their vineyards and how the elements of the natural environment are integrated, almost as if by magic. Here, old vines coexist with new vines; the former are pampered, the latter are nurtured.

Castle of la Coracera

It replicates the typical model of fortified noble residence most widespread in the first half of the 15th century. This model consisted of two defensive belts, surrounding the keep, the strongest and best-defended part, and therefore the heart of the fortress. It belonged to one of the most powerful figures in 15th-century Castile: D. Álvaro de Luna, Constable of Castile to King Juan II of Trastámara.
